Description

By the end of this session, participants will be able to: 1. Distinguish between translation and interpretation, and between certified and non-certified interpreters, to determine what level of language service a given case actually requires. 2. Apply a practical framework for locating and vetting credentialled (or otherwise qualified) interpreters and translators — including when dialect, subject-matter expertise, and cultural fit (e.g., gender, regional background) should factor into that choice. 3. Recognize best practices — and common red flags — when working with an interpreter during a live field interview, including pacing, question phrasing, and signs that interpretation may not be accurate or complete. 4. Describe how forensic linguistics — including threat assessment, authorship analysis, and discourse analysis of interrogations and confessions — can serve as an additional investigative tool in multilingual contexts beyond basic interpretation and translation services.
