DESCRIPTION:By the end of this session\, participants will be able to: 1. Distinguish between translation and interpretation\, and between certified and non-certified interpreters\, to determine what level of language service a given case actually requires. 2. Apply a practical framework for locating and vetting credentialled (or otherwise qualified) interpreters and translators including when dialect\, subject-matter expertise\, and cultural fit (e.g.\, gender\, regional background) should factor into that choice. 3. Recognize best practices and common red flags when working with an interpreter during a live field interview\, including pacing\, question phrasing\, and signs that interpretation may not be accurate or complete. 4. Describe how forensic linguistics including threat assessment\, authorship analysis\, and discourse analysis of interrogations and confessions can serve as an additional investigative tool in multilingual contexts beyond basic interpretation and translation services.
