Sgt. Steve Hickman


 Steve Hickman began his law enforcement career in October of 1988 as a reserve officer with the Watauga Dept. of Public Safety.  Officer Hickman accepted a full time position in May of 1989. 


In September of 1990 Officer Hickman entered the Fire Academy where he became a certified firefighter/EMT.  Upon completion of the fire academy Officer Hickman returned to patrol. 


In August of 1991 Officer Hickman was promoted to the position of Detective where he spent three years in the Criminal Investigations Division of the department.  After a gang related shooting in Watauga, Detective Hickman was transferred to the newly formed North East Street Crimes unit in May of 1994.  There he spent four years as a detective in a plain-clothes special assignment.


In 1998 Detective Hickman rotated out of the Street Crimes unit and back to uniform patrol. 


In March of 2003, Officer Hickman was promoted to the position of sergeant.  Sgt. Hickman remained a patrol sergeant until 2006 when he became the sergeant over the Criminal Investigation Division.  He remained in that position until 2009 when he rotated back to patrol.  He remained a patrol sergeant until 2018 when he retired honorably.


During his twenty-nine years with the Watauga Dept. of Public safety/Watauga Police Department, Sgt. Hickman was patrol officer, a criminal investigator, special assignment detective, S.W.A.T. team member, and a Field Training Officer.  He was an Honor Guard member and Sergeant of the Guard.  He was also instrumental in forming the bike patrol and was sergeant over that unit.   He held a TCLEOSE certified instructor and a defensive tactics instructor as well as a tactical baton instructor. He also was a Master Firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician.


Sgt. Hickman holds a Master Peace Officers certification and is currently working on a degree in criminal justice.  He has been married to his wife, Gina for thirty-six years.  They have six children between them and fifteen grandchildren.  He is currently a member of the Milestone Church in Keller.  Prior to entering the field of law enforcement, Steve began training in the martial arts.  While a member of the police department he continued training in multiple disciplines of self-defense, defensive tactics and tactical response.  His training eventually led him to begin training in Krav Maga.  Krav Maga is a defensive tactics system developed by the Israelis for the use by their military and law enforcement personnel. Steve received his instructor’s certification in August of 2009 and began teaching in January of 2010. During his time in the self-defense realm, he has attained a 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, 2nd degree black belt in Kenpo and Graduate level 3 in Krav Maga. He also has an instructor’s certification with ASP expandable baton, the Rapid Containment Baton, Gracie Law Enforcement, Krav Maga Law Enforcement, Pressure Point Control Tactics, and weapons instructor. He also, currently holds a Level 2, Level 3 and Level 4 security License with the state of Texas.  Level 2 is unarmed security, level 3 is armed security and level 4 is a personal protection officer.  He also holds a level 3 and level 4 Instructors license.  He is also an NRA pistol instructor.  He is a graduate from the International Security Training Institute with a certificate in Introduction to Close Protection Operations.
